City of El Cajon Offers Community Service Experience

Case Story

The City of El Cajon offers many opportunities for young people to gain valuable work and community service experience.

“For those worried about who will lead our cities in future years, you have no reason to fear. There are amazing students eager to take on the challenges we have yet to tackle.” – Graham Mitchell, El Cajon City Manager

Teen Jobs & Volunteer Opportunities

Youth ages 14-17 are encouraged to apply for positions working in sports and recreation through the Parks and Recreation Department.  Youth are also actively recruited to serve as volunteer mentors and leaders for local summer camp programs. Whether they are paid or serve as volunteers, youth receive training and mentorship from adult staff.

Leadership Program

The City of El Cajon facilitates a Teen Coalition to engage, educate and empower teens in grades 6-12 who are city residents or students attending El Cajon schools.  Teens participate for one year and enjoy learning and discussing key topics such as education, the juvenile justice system, the local economy, and community development.  Teen Coalition members develop and lead community service projects.
